Ahmet Kenan Evren - Turkish politician and military officer, who served as the seventh President of Turkey from 1980 to 1989. He assumed the post by leading the 1980 military coup.
Ahmet Kenan Evren was born in Alaşehir, Manisa Province. His father was of Albanian origins. His mother was from a Bulgarian Turkish background. Kenan Evren who got married to Sekine Hanım in 1944 was the father of three children.
Kenan Evren was born in Alaşehir district of Manisa in 1917. He received his primary and secondary education in Alaşehir, Manisa, Balıkesir and İstanbul and graduated from Maltepe Military High School.
Evren, who received degrees from the Military College and the Military Academy in 1938 and 1949 respectively, started his career in the military as an artillery and staff officer.
Kenan Evren first served as the Director of the Operations and Training, then as the Chief of Staff in the Ninth Korean Turkish Brigade during the Korean War. After serving as the Army Commander and Armed Forces Commander, he was appointed as the Chief of General Staff on 7 March 1978.
Following the 12 September 1980 military intervention, Evren assumed the Chairmanship of the National Security Council. In addition to his regular duties he also became the Head of State.
As a result of the acceptance of a new Constitution in a referendum on 7 November 1982, Evren became the seventh President of Türkiye. He left the Office on 9 November 1989 upon completion of his seven year term.
Kenan Evren died at 98 on 9 May 2015.
Kenan Evren who got married to Sekine Hanım in 1944 was the father of three children.
